Pentecost - 2007Return to Worship and the Arts home pageNew for this year are streamers created from red, yellow, and orange material and attached by nylon line to a thin dowel, simulating flames. We placed part of these in the holes drilled into the top of our sanctuary wainscoting for the Easter season "Alleluia banners." The rest were distributed to various persons among the congregation, who waved them during the Pentecost liturgy. A detailed shot of a streamer with the cross in the background is displayed to the left below, and a shot of streamers situated on top of the wainscoting is displayed to the right.
As in past years, we hung more Pentecostal flames on gauze behind the sanctuary cross (first picture below). In addition, we added two standards of flames, which were processed and placed in on the left and right side of the chancel. Bill McLeod created the standard poles and bases; he and son, Malcolm, have also contributed other fine wood crafts, including the stand for our font and our intricate Celtic processional cross. The middle picture shows details of the standard "flames." Finally, the end shot presents a close-up view of our Pentecost Table covering.
Birds of the Air
Last year we introduced paper birds to represent the holy spirit during the latter part of ordinary time. This year,
we decided to introduce our birds in time for Trinity Sunday. The pictures below indicate how the effect of the birds is created.
First, a grid of transparent nylon line is laid out by fastening ends to each of our three "raising devices." Then
the birds are suspended at random lengths from the grid using additional pieces of nylon line. The picture at the right shows detail
of the the nylon lines backlit by our new chancel spotlights.
The pictures below show the birds from various views. The shot on the left shows details of the raised birds. The middle panel
shows the birds hovering above our chancel cross. Finally, the right panel presents a view looking up at the birds from our font octagon.
