Easter - 2006Return to Worship and the Arts home pageAs we did last year, we returned the chancel palms for Palm Sunday, placing them on either side of the chancel. Lenten wreaths were fixed with red streamers; detail is shown below. Our gauzy red cloth from last year adorned the Table. Also our red Passion/Palm Sunday parament was draped from the pulpit. A close-up image is also shown below, capturing the red flowers in front of the pulpit which accented the parament. For the remainder of the week, the palms were removed from the sanctuary. In preparation for Good Friday, all adornment was removed from the Sanctuary at the end of our Maundy Thursday Service.
For Easter morning, the chancel was adorned with lilies propped on different-sized cardboard boxes. The large boxes were the same ones in which the lilies were delivered. White sheets were draped over the boxes, and white gauze was folded in around the lilies to complete the effect. The large chancel palm was moved behind the cross for backgound color and to remind us of the palms of the preceding Sunday. Lilies and gauze were also extended outward and placed around the pulpit. Four lilies with gauze were placed around the sanctuary font to continue the theme. To accent the flowers we again used our pulley system to raise floor-to-ceiling strips of gold satin and gauze at both sides of the chancel. This theme was reinforced by adding a gold satin runner over the white linen cloth covering the Table. These were new decorations created for Christmas 2005. Another complementary touch was placing gold Alleluia! banners (which made their debut last Easter season) above the sanctuary wainscoting. An interesting effect is created when ambient air currents cause these banners to move, reminding us of Holy breath or spirit. The movement prompts us to reflect that, truly, "Jesus Christ is risen, Alleluia!"
