Sanctuary Choir

Sanctuary Choir The Sanctuary Choir meets for rehearsal every Wednesday at 7:30 PM in the Choir room. During the 11:00 Sunday service, a Cantor leads the congregation in singing the Psalm, and directs the singing of communion hymns. The choir normally sings an anthem at the beginning of communion. After announcements of interest to the congregation, our organist, Martha Hopson, begins the service with a Prelude. The service is concluded with the Postlude. The choir also sings special music at Christmas and Easter. Other special evening performances for the congregation and community may be scheduled during the year.

Tenebrae Service

Tenebrae, March 16, 2008
A Service of Darkness
by Hal Hopson

Rich drama, reflects on the deeper meaning of the Passion and Death of Jesus, and the gradual decrease of light to darkness evokes feelings of retracing Jesus’ final steps. The service of Tenebrae follows a tradition of the church dating back to the eighth century. From Latin, the word Tenebrae means "darkness" and commemorates the final hours of our Lord's life on earth, as he suffered death upon the cross. This particular setting of the service may be used at any appropriate time in Holy Week. As candles are extinguished, they symbolize the fading loyalty of the disciples and friends of Jesus. The gradual darkening of the church portrays the diminishing light of the world as Christ was departing from it. Following an instrumental prelude, a series of seventeen readings - some short, some a bit longer - are read with choir and assembly interspersing musical responses.
