We should be proud of our youth! I AM. On the last weekend of August (before
Katrina captured the nation’s attention), 34 WPPC youth and advisors traveled
to Waco to participate in a ministry that feeds the homeless. We found ourselves
part of a congregation of homeless who come from all parts of the city to become
a worshiping community. We made our way early Sunday morning after an evening
of preparing food and preparing hearts - our hearts - for an experience we knew
would be challenging. We learned from scripture that “Jesus was already under
the bridge in Waco.” We learned that Jesus comes to us in the persons of those
most needy. We learned to ask ourselves about the ways God is already at work
within this community beneath the bridge. So - we prayed, gave our lives up to
the hand of God, and plunged into an experience of relating with these folks just
as if they were like any of us, . . . which we discovered they were, in very
large measure. Of course, some looked like

what we had expected of the homeless, but
many more looked no different than many of us. In short - all those under the
bridge were found to be human beings, God’s children, eager for the respect and
dignity that belongs to all who are created in God’s image. Upon our return, we
spent an “electric” hour of debriefing as person after person shared her and his
experience. I was floored by what I heard from our youth.
A week later, Katrina hit our gulf coast scattering hundreds of thousands and
rendering homeless more than a million of our fellow citizens. I think our youth
know more about what these new homeless are facing than they did before the Waco
trip. And - I think they are better able to see each one as a sister or brother we
are called to serve. If you think I am hyping this experience, just ask any of those
who went. You’ll be as proud as I am.
